DIY Water Filters and Rain Barrels
DIY water filters and rain barrels are two ways you can get control of your water and make sure it is the best for your family. Make sure your drinking water is clear of contaminants, tastes good, and smells good. I have written several articles about the issues with the drinking water in the U.S. including water that catches fire and why we should not drink water in plastic bottles.
This article is more about taking control of your situation no matter where you live or what your climate is. There are always parts of the world in a drought situation and the U.S. is going through that now. There have been some record setting heat and lack of rain in several parts of the country this year. In those cases, everyone needs to conserve as much as they can. Filtering your drinking water will help eliminate most of the contaminants that could get into your water do to drought.
Almost everyone can afford a water filter pitcher or even a faucet water filter. The water filter pitcher is filled at the sink with tap water but then the filter removes lead, copper, mercury, cadmium, and zinc impurities often found in your water. You should change your filter about every 40 gallons. Prices for the pitcher can range from $6.95 to $30 or more depending on the size of the pitcher. Filters can range from $14.00 to $30 depending on how many you buy at a time. If you like cold water, the pitcher fits on refrigerator shelf or door shelves.
If you would rather filter more water, you can get a faucet water filter for all of the water running through that faucet. One example is Paragon Water Filtration System that can remove 97% of lead, 99.9% of giardia and cryptosporidium, 98% of chlorine, and 95-99% of VOCs like benzene and trihalomethanes. There are many brands of faucet filters on the market, they range in price from $14.00 to $180.00 depending on how much water you want it to filter, and what you want removed from the water. You can also find some that allow you to turn off the filtering just to wash dishes or whatever.
Another way to control your use of water is to get a rain barrel. Even if you live in an area affected by drought today, you can help control what rain you do get. You may ask why mess with a rain barrel? It is a great way to recycle the runoff from your roof and use it to ease drought-like conditions in your garden or with other plants. Once the water is in the rain barrel, you can use that water in a garden, wash a car, and other outdoor uses. Most of these barrels have a threaded spigot so you can attach a garden hose to put the water where you want.
Some of these rain barrels can be hooked together with an ordinary garden hose. Shop around and see which barrels have the features you like the best. Most of them hold about 60 gallons but that can vary as well. Some are made from metal while there are some made of plastic that collapse when empty and pop-up when full of water.
Even if you do not consider yourself a Do It Yourself type, this is something that is easy, inexpensive, and that pays you back over time.

Jest to Fact
For some time now I've been saying in jest that it isn't safe to go to the grocery store anymore because you never knew who you'll brush up against carrying a loaded weapon. I no longer say that in jest, it's now a fact.
Yesterday two customers argued in the check out line of a grocery store here. One of the arguing parties took out his gun and shot the other in the leg. Now I ask you, was that smart?
Yes the shooter had a licence to carry a concealed weapon. Should he have had such a licence?
When will America learn to leave guns at the city limits?
As long as guns are allowed on city streets and buildings, law enforcement, emergency rooms, surgeons and funeral homes will have job security.

A Dog I Could Love
I read an article this morning that stated Congresswoman Gabby Giffords is being evaluated to see if she qualifies for this kind of dog as a service dog.
"Operation Wolfhound, which operates out of Arizona, uses borzois because the breed has the temperament most suitable to respond to stress. Congresswoman Giffords worked with Operation Wolfhound from the beginning and her staff is very important to them."
The breeder in the article is donating 5 of her 12 dogs to Operation Wolfhound that places them as service dogs for veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
I think you will find the article interesting.
The pictures are from the Internet but I do not know how to give credits for them.

History Of Holiday Wreaths
History Of Holiday Wreaths
Wreaths are used since ages, examples are the ancient Rome and ancient Greece used wreaths as a headdress for the Olympic prizes, battle or military heroes, emperors and so on. It is also said that in ancient times, Romans used wreaths as a victory sign as well. Let us make a distinction here between different types of wreaths used in the past as we have some historical facts before us. In past the laurel wreaths were meant for athletes and the wreaths made of olive branches were used for military or battle heroes. The Christmas wreaths symbolize how life overcome the forces of winter. Wreaths are also used as symbol of welcome to all guests. Wreaths are mostly in circular shape without having the starting or ending point. Due to its unique design, these are considered as the symbol of faith and also represent the mercy and eternity of God during the Christmas Eve. Different colors used in wreath or the leaves represent different things. For instance, the evergreen leaves and branches in the wreath symbolize the everlasting life and the love of God. On the other hand, the green color also signifies the new life and hope and sometimes also peace.
In past, the Christmas wreaths were made of plants which were capable of maintaining their green shades throughout the entire year. Those wreaths were usually made of pine, holly and ivy. The purpose behind those wreaths was to show that the life is everlasting and the greenness of the leaves in the winter season truly symbolizes this fact.
Most of the people around the world relate the holiday wreaths to the Christmas wreaths. But in fact, there are certain other kinds of wreaths also. An important thing here to mention is that wreaths never have any special connection to any particular religion. This is a common thought of many of the people that wreaths are meant to be in connection with some specific religion. Nowadays, wreaths are made from plastic, artificial flowers and fresh flowers along with other leaves, berries and branches. Many people used them as a decoration on their doors, windows, fireplaces and even on tables.
These are now made almost the whole year and not confined to the winter season. No matter what is the purpose behind using these wreaths, they are surely a great way to express one feeling either by using it as a decoration or giving it as a gift on special events.
